Four AI Stocks That Could Withstand Market Turbulence

Listen to the audio version of this article (generated by AI).

While a key writer is away, InvestorPlace's analysts are stepping up to share their top stock picks. Today, we’re turning to Thomas Yeung, who has insights on the aftermath of a prominent AI hedge fund's tumultuous journey.

In light of recent market fluctuations, he’s advocating for a strategic reevaluation of investment choices. As Tom outlines, the next chapter in the AI narrative may favor a distinct set of companies compared to those that thrived in the initial boom. For an even broader perspective, consider viewing Eric Fry’s free Market Shock presentation; there, he elaborates on his framework for identifying potential winners in this space.

Now, let's delve into the key lessons learned from the AI market's recent upheavals.

Hello, Readers.

Investment education often comes with a hefty price tag. We all recall those early missteps: the anxiety of your first loss, the shock of an unexpected tax bill, or the frustration of mistakenly clicking "buy" instead of "sell." These experiences, while painful, are pivotal in shaping us into better traders.

Ideally, we absorb these lessons gradually, catching our financial mistakes early. However, one notable AI hedge fund has recently paid a steep price for its learning curve.

The fund in question is Situational Awareness, founded by the promising Leopold Aschenbrenner. A mere 24-year-old ex-OpenAI researcher, Aschenbrenner gained significant attention in 2024 with his predictive essay titled “Situational Awareness: The Decade Ahead,” where he forecasted the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Backed by his bold vision, he launched his hedge fund to capitalize on the AI revolution, and for a time, it seemed to be almost magical. The fund skyrocketed 2,000% in 2025, followed by an impressive 439% jump in the first half of 2026, achieving a valuation of $45 billion at its zenith.

That joyride, however, had a swift ending. This summer, the AI market faced turbulence, leading Situational Awareness to heavy losses. Ultimately, Aschenbrenner was compelled to liquidate much of his portfolio, resulting in an 80% loss after selling to Citadel, a well-known hedge fund led by Ken Griffin.

Aschenbrenner may have accurately envisioned the future landscape of AI, but he hadn’t designed a portfolio that could weather volatility.

The takeaway for individual investors is clear: you don't need a billion-dollar portfolio to thrive in the evolving AI sector. Today, I'll outline the pivotal traits that differentiate sustainable businesses from the inevitable failures and introduce a company that embodies these principles.

Vision Without Strategy: The Lesson from Situational Awareness

To be fair, Aschenbrenner's view on AI remains largely valid. AI technologies are advancing rapidly, and enterprises are investing vast sums to improve infrastructures and algorithms necessary for this growth. The AI sector is poised for substantial long-term expansion.

Yet, having the right vision doesn’t equate to making wise investment choices. Let’s consider an analogy: imagine realizing in 1997 that the internet would revolutionize commerce. If you poured your entire savings into Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), you would have reaped enormous returns, given that its stock has soared by more than 300,000% since then.

Now, picture the same investor deciding to invest in Pets.com instead. Despite its catchy Super Bowl advertising and publicity, it collapsed, unable to sustain profitability and plummeting from an IPO price of $11 to mere cents before disappearing entirely in 2001, erasing investor capital and jobs alike.

The AI sector will witness similar disparities in success. Not every enterprise in this space will succeed; many will inevitably falter. But what really derailed Situational Awareness was not a lack of faith in AI. Instead, it was the significant leverage employed to bolster their investments. When the AI market faltered, those speculative positions became untenable.

This raises a vital lesson for individual investors: you can be correct about the future yet still incur losses if you engage with the wrong companies, overpay, or accumulate excessive risk.

Smart Strategies for AI Investments

Now, the pressing question is how to distinguish between the “Amazon successes” and “Pets.com failures” in the AI market.

The good news? There are recognizable traits among successful businesses, even in an industry as dynamic as AI:

1. A strong competitive edge. Some AI firms possess invaluable technologies that grant them pricing power, effectively acting as barriers against competitors. These advantages are critical to a company's long-lasting success.

2. Competitive pricing. The best opportunities arise when stocks are purchased at reasonable valuations before their value is recognized. If a company’s stock is worth $1,000 a share today, the investor stands to gain significantly more if they can buy it at $10 or less.

These principles guide my colleague Eric Fry in his research on AI investments. He’s not fixated on finding “the next Nvidia” or “the next Amazon.” Given that these established giants have already captured widespread attention, the real potential might lie in less recognized sectors.

The absurdity of expecting Amazon to rise another 300,000% is evident, pushing it into a virtually unattainable valuation of $9 quadrillion. At that point, even spending a billion dollars daily, humanity would take approximately 25,000 years to exhaust that amount!

Furthermore, Eric isn't inclined to replicate the high-risk, high-return strategy that previously enabled Situational Awareness to achieve both immense gains and subsequent catastrophic failures. While extraordinary returns can be appealing, enduring an 80% loss in times of market stress is not viable for most investors.

Instead, he prioritizes a select group of companies that are pivotal to the AI infrastructure dubbed “Golden Rivets.” These are the essential components that sustain AI development.

Often overlooked, these are companies that don’t necessarily get the limelight that newer AI entrants do. Frequently, they’re traditional businesses that haven’t attracted intense market speculation amid the rush toward chips and chatbot advancements.

A prime example of such a player is Teradyne Inc. (TER). Teradyne isn't in a race to create the next AI model; rather, it manufactures the sophisticated automated testing tools that semiconductor producers depend on to ensure their AI chips perform effectively after leaving the production line.

Whether it's Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), or another chipmaker that ultimately prevails in the AI arena, testing remains non-negotiable. This kind of strategic alignment is exactly why Eric is interested in such businesses.

The companies fueling the growth of major AI players will likely be those constructing chips, powering data centers, and even contributing to the infrastructure supporting AI applications beyond Earth.

Eric discusses Teradyne and three other semiconductor-related stocks in his free Market Shock presentation. He explains why these overlooked firms could generate greater rewards than some of the market's current favorites.

In investing, we all eventually face our tuition fee. The goal is to minimize that cost, avoiding the pitfall of losing billions. May today’s insights guide you toward smarter investment choices.

Looking Ahead: Key Considerations for AI Investment

As we close this discussion on the evolving trends within the AI sector, it’s clear that the landscape is both promising and precarious. While the advancements in AI technology present opportunities, they also come with significant risks. Investors need to keep a sharp eye on the volatility that has recently plagued the market. Stock fluctuations in AI companies do not tell the full story—they demand a cautious approach. Here’s the thing: the ability of companies to innovate and adapt will determine their long-term viability. It's crucial to differentiate between those poised for sustainable growth and those riding a temporary wave of hype. The trend of AI integration across various industries presents a fascinating backdrop; yet, the performance of stocks will heavily depend on execution and market demand. What does this mean for you? If you're engaging in investment decisions within this domain, focus on companies with a track record of resilience and sound business strategies. Look for players that not only produce innovative technology but also demonstrate a keen awareness of market dynamics and customer needs. Moreover, keep in mind that regulatory scrutiny is increasing, which could impact certain companies more than others. It’s not entirely clear how sweeping regulations will shape the market, but their potential impact cannot be ignored. Staying informed and flexible will be your greatest assets in navigating the uncertain waters ahead. In summary, while the promise of AI is undeniable, prudent investors should approach this sector with a critical lens. As AI technologies continue to evolve, so too will the investment landscape. Stay vigilant and prepared for the shifts that lie ahead.
